oai:setDescription Books from the Library of Congress collections digitized for France in America, a collaborative, bilingual digital library assembled by the Library of Congress and the Bibliothèque national de France. To date, the collaborative project illuminates two major themes in the history of relations between France and the United States: the role played by France in the exploration and settlement of the continent and its participation in several events which indelibly marked the history of the United States: the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the Louisiana Purchase. Includes books written by French explorers, missionaries, military officers and others who charted new routes or traveled across the Atlantic Ocean and across the North American continent, established early French settlements, negotiated alliances with Native tribes, and participated in the American War of Independence. Rare works include an account of France's attempted settlement at Rio de Janeiro (1557), Samuel de Champlain's account of his voyage to Canada (1613), and a peace treaty between the King of France and the Indians of Canada (1667).
