oai:setDescription Civil War Photographs provides online access to about 7,000 different images made during the American Civil War (1861-1865) and in its immediate aftermath. The images were scanned from the Prints and Photographs Division's collection of original glass plate negatives and from copy negatives made from photographic prints the Division holds. The original images were acquired from various sources. Images depict military personnel and facilities, primarily from a Union perspective. Includes the main Eastern theater, the federal navy and seaborne expeditions against the Atlantic Coast of the Confederacy, the war in the West, Washington, D.C., African Americans, fortifications, battlefields, preparations for battle and the aftermath of battle. Also, many portraits of officers and enlisted men, and of federal and confederate government members, including Abraham Lincoln and his assassins.
